Once
you meet with an attorney and CPA to compose your last will
and testament, it may seem like you’re done with your estate
planning and you have nothing left to worry about. Not so fast,
however, because there are other documents you need to consider,
one of them being a post-mortem letter.
A post-mortem letter is a relatively simple,
yet powerful, document that tells your survivors where to find
everything they need to carry out the instructions in your will.
For example, where is the deed to the income property you own
in north Tampa? How about the account number for the CD you
opened at a small Clearwater bank? Or the burial plot you purchased
in St Petersburg – does your family know where the paperwork
is for that?
While you can write a post-mortem letter yourself,
you may want to consult with your CPA
in Tampa, since a CPA will remind you about the many details
your post-mortem letter should include, such as:
- Bank account numbers
- Credit card numbers
- Deeds to property you own
- Mortgage papers
- Insurance policies
- Tax returns
- Titles to vehicles
- Contact information for your attorney,
insurance agent, CPA in Tampa, etc.
- The location of your birth certificate,
social security card, passport, etc.
- User names and passwords to access digital
information
- Contact information for your employer,
family members, friends, and associates who should be notified
of your death
- Special instructions for the care of your
pets, property, vehicles, etc.
Without a post-mortem letter, a lot of important
matters can slip through the cracks after you pass away. In
addition, a post-mortem letter can make the difficult and painful
situation of your passing a little easier on your loved ones.
Your post-mortem letter can also help ensure that all of your
assets are accounted for and not lost in the shuffle.
To make sure your post-mortem letter is able
to do its job, leave copies of it with your spouse, attorney,
CPA, executor, and in any other location(s) you think it can
be easily found after your death. To learn more about writing
a post-mortem letter, contact Reliance Consulting, LLC, for
a free initial consultation and checkup of your financial health.
