A
Certified Public Accountant, or CPA, is an accountant who has
earned this title by successfully completing specified coursework
and passing a rigorous exam. The exam, called the Uniform CPA
Examination, is developed, administered, and graded by The American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Anyone who
passes this exam will earn a CPA certificate, but this certificate
does not make anyone a CPA. CPAs also must become licensed in
any state they plan to practice, and each state has its own
requirements for licensing. Furthermore, after a CPA has earned
his or her state license(s), continuing professional education
is required to keep the license active.
Any CPA in Tampa
you speak to, therefore, has gone through several demanding
steps to earn the sought-after title of Certified Public Accountant.
Like all accountants, a CPA is highly skilled in taxes, payroll,
and bookkeeping – but in addition, a CPA is a trained business
advisor and financial advisor. Examples of the many areas in
which a CPA can assist Tampa area businesses, individuals, and
organizations include:
- Auditing
- Tax planning and advising
- Advising businesses of all sizes, from
Fortune 500 companies to small family restaurants
- Helping individuals plan and reach their
financial goals
- Determining whether a new product line
will be profitable
- Diversifying investments
- Providing investment advice
- Planning company purchases, sales, and
mergers
- Estate planning
- Financial planning and analysis
- Much more
To be successful, a CPA also will need excellent
interpersonal and communication skills. That way, he or she
will be able to explain what “the numbers” mean and how they
affect your goals. Another big part of being a CPA is listening
– your Tampa CPA should always listen to your needs, concerns,
and goals, and handle them with the utmost concern. Ethics is
a significant part of being a CPA as well; clients rely on their
CPAs to be honest, trustworthy, and discreet. Finally, your
CPA in Tampa should be dedicated to keeping up with the latest
technologies, whether it’s accounting software for your CPA’s
internal use or state-of-the-art equipment advice to make your
business more efficient and profitable.
